If you want to feel great behind the wheel, invest some time and detail your own car.
Most of us spend a lot of time in our cars. Between your daily commute, heading out to meet friends and family, and the occasional road trip, you rack up a lot of hours in the driver’s seat. Shouldn’t you make them as pleasant as possible? Detail your own car and you’ll have a great environment in which to enjoy your ride without having to pull out your wallet! Add this DIY guide to your usual car wash routine for a deeper clean.
- Deal with dirt. Make sure you’re not just pushing the grime around when you clean by tackling your dirtiest areas first. Start with your cup holders by vacuuming them out. Then slide an old sock over the bottom of a cup that fits snugly into the cup holder. Spray it with window cleaner and twist to scrub out the holder. Then, attach your crevice tool to your vacuum hose and attack those little nooks and crannies throughout your car. If you have trouble getting into tight corners, put a cotton swap over a wood skewer.
- Freshen up your fabrics. Spray a foaming carpet cleaner over your carpets and cloth seats and vacuum it up. This can help you lift out ground-in dirt and odors.
- Do your dash. When cleaning any plastic surfaces on your dashboard, make sure you use a glass cleaner that’s ammonia free or you could end up bleaching the plastic.
- Wash your wheels. Grab your wheel cleaner (check that it’s safe for all surfaces) and scrub your wheels with a sponge. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush to work at any particularly dirty areas.
