The summer sun makes the season fun, but it’s also risky for your skin. Use these tips to practice some self-defense.
The summer’s heating up – literally! The mercury’s rising and the days are longer, meaning we have the opportunity to soak up a whole lot of sunshine. That’s fabulous news for your beach plans, but it could be risky for your skin. If you’re heading out into the summer sun, use these tips to avoid wrinkles, age spots, and even skin cancer.
- Cover up. It’s not rocket science; the less skin you expose to the sun, the less risk you run of sunburn and other serious sun exposure issues. A wide brimmed hat and loose, flowy clothing can help keep you cool and safeguard your skin this summer.
- Learn to love sunscreen. You should be wearing sunscreen every single day, not just in the summer. If you’re not already in the habit, this is the perfect time to find a sunscreen you like and get used to using it. Choose a broad-spectrum option with an SPF (sun protection factor, in case you were wondering) of at least 30. Put it on at least 15 minutes before you go outside, and reapply every two hours.
- Eye your eyewear. Did you know you can sunburn your eyes? Ouch! Avoid this painful, gritty feeling by wearing sunglasses with UV protection when you’re out in the sun.
- Plan ahead. The sun is at its peak from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., so you risk the greatest exposure during those hours. Plan your hike for the morning and your beach day for the afternoon.
