Come October 20 at 10:20 a.m. join in on a statewide earthquake drill. Check out what you need to know about preparing your home, work, and car for an earthquake.
During an Earthquake:
As soon as the earth starts to shake, take cover and hold on. Get under a sturdy table, grab one of the table legs, and cover your head and neck. Do not run outside. Stay indoors if you can, and if you’re in bed, stay in bed. If you’re already outside when an earthquake hits, do your best to move away from large objects that can topple over like buildings, trees, and power lines. Get to an open space, drop to the ground and cover your head and neck. If you’re on the road, stop your car in a safe area away from any fall risks. Avoid any bridges, underpasses, or ramps as they can be extremely dangerous. No matter where you are, wait for the shaking to stop and be cautious.
Before an earthquake strikes, it’s important to be prepared. Take the necessary precautions before disaster strikes. Ensure that all heavy items of furniture and appliances are securely bolted to the ground. Additionally, it’s imperative to keep a kit full of emergency supplies on hand in your home, office, and car. Keep water, non-perishable food, a first-aid kit, flashlights, blankets, and anything else you think you may need.
