When the rain won’t go away, use these tips for safe driving and get auto insurance to protect yourself.
El Niño is bringing much-needed rain to our state. While that’s good news for our current drought-delivered State of Emergency, it might make it harder to get from Point A to Point B. Use these tips for driving in rain to keep yourself safe and skid-free even on the slippery roadways.
Wait it out.
If at all possible, the best thing to do is to wait until the rain stops before driving. If that’s not an option, give it at least ten minutes. When the rain first starts, it brings up the oil collected on the road – making it extra slippery. If you can wait ten minutes, you’ll get much better traction.
Slow it down.
The rain will make it harder for your tires to grip the road, so do yourself a favor and give them extra time to get traction. This means slowing down! Remember, posted speed limits are for ideal road conditions. Avoid hydroplaning by reducing your speed. Also, leave an extra couple of second of following time between you and the car in front of you to account for the lessened traction.
Light it up.
Even if you’re only driving in a light rain, turning on your headlights is wise. When you’re driving in the rain, you want to give other drivers as much time as possible to respond to your vehicle. They’ll be able to see you earlier if your lights are on.
While these tips will help you keep your car under better control during the rain, accidents do happen. If you find yourself slipping and sliding into a collision, would you have the auto insurance you need to protect yourself and your finances?
